Educational Web Technologies
The people behind ClassTools
We are a small team inside UCI's Office of Information Technology. We build and look after the teaching tools you use every quarter.
Who We Are
Educational Web Technologies (EWT) is a team of six full-time staff and two students within UCI’s Office of Information Technology, focused on supporting teaching and learning through technology.
Our small team includes development, user experience, product management, and quality assurance. ClassTools is home to many of the tools we design, build, and maintain for UCI’s unique academic environment.

Our roots go back to 1995, when UCI began developing the Electronic Educational Environment (EEE), a collaboration that brought together campus partners to create online tools for teaching and learning. EEE started by hosting just ten class websites and grew into a suite of homegrown tools supporting UCI’s academic environment.
As UCI adopted platforms like Canvas, our work evolved too. Rather than recreating what those platforms already provide, we now focus on the places where UCI needs something more. We’ve built tools that enable instructors to customize their Canvas course spaces, add UCI student IDs to the Canvas Gradebook, provide Canvas access to waitlisted students, and more.
Today, we continue a tradition of more than 30 years of building technology for our campus, guided by a simple vision: to bolster teaching and learning effectiveness at UC Irvine.
